What are discharge aids used for?
They are generally used with materials that possess poor flow properties, meaning they do not flow reliably or evenly to the bin outlet.
Discharge aids can help prevent or eliminate flow disruptions like bridging, ensuring a consistent material flow to downstream processes. They thus play an important role in the storage, conveying, and feeding of bulk materials.
When are discharge aids necessary?
Whether a discharge aid is necessary depends on both the bulk material's properties and the bin's design. Particularly fine, cohesive, or poor-flowing materials may have a tendency to compact, adhere to container walls, or form stable material bridges.
In addition to flowability, factors like particle size and shape, moisture content, and bulk density influence discharge behavior. Bin geometry, outlet size, and process conditions also play an important part.
What types of discharge aids are available?
Depending on bulk material and application, different technical principles come into play. Discharge aids can, for example, mobilize the material through vibration or mechanical movement, promoting material flow towards the outlet. Designing the discharge area with the material properties in mind can also contribute to a controlled bulk material flow.
The ideal solution thus cannot be determined based merely on the desired feeding rate. The interaction between bulk material properties, bin, and downstream process is crucial.
