Bulk material

Bulk materials are free-flowing or flowable solid materials in loose form that can be stored, conveyed, discharged, or fed in large quantities.

What properties do bulk materials have?

Not all bulk materials are the same. The physical properties of the various materials differ – significantly so, in some cases. Typical bulk materials are powders, granules, pellets, flakes, or fibers. They are used as raw materials, intermediate products, or additives in numerous industrial production processes.

Important parameters for processing include bulk density, flowability, and particle size, shape, and size distribution. Moisture content and the tendency to adhere and compact can also influence a material's behavior.

A free-flowing granulate places different demands on plant technology than a fine, cohesive powder or a fibrous material. Poor-flowing bulk materials can, for example, compact or form bridges, which may impair or completely interrupt the material flow from a hopper or bin.

Significance of bulk materials for feeding

Bulk material properties have a direct influence on feeder selection and design. The goal is to achieve a material flow that is as consistent and controlled as possible, allowing the required quantity to be reliably fed into the downstream process.

Various feeding methods are available for this purpose. Depending on the material, screw feeders, vibrating feeders, or weigh-belt feeders can be used. For demanding bulk materials, suitable discharge aids may also be required to ensure a continuous flow of material.

Precise knowledge of the bulk material is thus an essential prerequisite for selecting a suitable feeding solution and ensuring a reliable production process.
