Bulk Material Feeding

Bulk material feeding refers to the controlled feeding of a defined quantity of a solid, loose material into a production process.

What materials are fed?

Examples of fed materials include powders, granules, pellets, flakes, and fibers. The goal is to supply the bulk material in the required quantity and with as consistent a flow as possible.

Bulk material feeding is an important process step in numerous industrial applications, including the production of plastics, food, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and building materials.

How are bulk materials fed?

Bulk material feeding can be implemented either volumetrically or gravimetrically. In volumetric feeding, a defined amount of material is supplied based on its volume. Gravimetric feeding, on the other hand, measures the weight or mass flow, using it as a control variable. Fluctuations in material behavior during the feeding process can thus be taken into account.

Various feeders are available for the dispensing of material. For example, screw feeders transport bulk material via a rotating screw, while vibrating feeders move material through vibrations. Which method is suitable depends on the specific application.

Bulk material determines feeding solution

Reliable bulk material feeding requires that feeder, material, and process be properly coordinated. In addition to the desired feed rate and accuracy, the properties of the bulk material play a particularly important role.

Free-flowing granules behave differently during feeding than cohesive powders or fibrous materials. Factors like bulk density and flowability influence the flow of material and, consequently, the feeder's selection and design. For poor-flowing materials, additional discharge aids may be necessary.

Adapting bulk material feeding to the specific material and process contributes significantly to consistent product quality, reliable operations, and a high level of process reliability.
