Hygienic Design

Hygienic design refers to the hygienic design of machines, systems, and components.

What is hygienic design used for?

Its goal is to avoid contamination, facilitate cleaning, and support product safety. Hygienic design plays a particularly important role in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industries, where high demands are placed on hygiene and product quality.

In feeding technology, hygienic design primarily concerns the construction of parts that come into contact with the product. Smooth finishes, easily accessible components, and a design with as few gaps and inaccessible areas as possible are intended to prevent material residues from adhering and becoming difficult to remove.

Which features characterize hygienic design?

Feeders designed to meet hygiene standards are characterized by a number of design features. These includes, for example, suitable finishes and materials that are easy to clean and resistant to specific cleaning agents. The design of transitions, connections, and seals also plays an important part in avoiding hard-to-reach areas and product build-up.

Another aspect is the good accessibility of components in contact with product. Depending on device configuration, components like screws, hoppers, or other parts can be easily removed for cleaning.

Why is hygienic design important in feeding technology?

When feeding powders, granules, or other bulk materials, product residue can remain in the feeder. This creates a risk of carryover and cross contamination, particularly when there are frequent changes in products or formulations.

Hygienic design helps to reduce these risks and simplify cleaning processes. At the same time, shorter cleaning and setup times can improve equipment availability.

The requirements for the hygienic design of a feeder depend, among other things, on the material being processed, applicable hygiene regulations, and the intended cleaning procedures.
