Batch Feeding

In batch feeding, also called discontinuous feeding, a predetermined amount of material is measured out into a single batch.

How does batch feeding work?

Unlike continuous feeding, this method focuses not on maintaining a consistent flow of material over an extended period of time, but on achieving a defined total quantity as precisely as possible. Batch feeding is used when raw materials or other components are combined into batches according to a defined recipe, and then processed further together.

In batch feeding, a defined target quantity is specified for each ingredient. The feeder measures out material until this quantity is reached. The feeding process is then stopped, and the batch moves on to the next process step.

The feeding process can be volumetric or gravimetric. When high accuracy is required, the actually fed mass is measured using weighing technology.

One possible gravimetric method is gain-in-weight (GIW). Here, material is fed into a weighing container, while the increase in its weight is continuously measured. Multiple ingredients can be added to the same container one after another until the quantities specified for the respective formulation are reached.

Coarse and fine feeding in batch processes

To feed a batch both quickly and precisely, the feeding process can be divided into coarse and fine feeding. Initially, a higher feed rate is used. As the weight approaches the specified target value, the flow rate is reduced. This allows higher precision in reaching the desired target weight.

Which dispensing system is suitable for a batch process depends, among other things, on bulk material, batch size, required feeding accuracy, and number of ingredients.
